When working on a long project in academia…
There are two ways to handle it.
- Come up with a project and justify its existence.
- Come up with a problem and justify its solution with a project.
In the end, no matter which you end up choosing, if it turns out your explanation is not matching the project, change the explanation and not the project.
Unless you hate the project. Then you’re screwed. >_>
