Looking for the answer
Dream!
I was at some sort of small reunion… it didn’t seem any bigger than maybe ten or so people, and all of the SC were there, but only Kim featured strongly and this guy I knew from elementary school and didn’t really interact with in high school.
I don’t know what got us started, but we were trying to solve a math problem. Not a terribly difficult one… it was a word problem involving two people and a set of twins living together, how much was their accumulated rent? Or something like that. And we were using a nice TI graphing calculator to arrive at the answer, but…
… Well, you kind of have to know how the TI-89 calculator works, like you can type in a calculation and it will give you an answer that is accurate, but not totally simplified.
So we were using this calculator to try and solve this four step problem, but each time we solved a part of the problem, the calculator would give us the answer for that step and it’d be accurate, but there would be a little bit of “extra stuff” in it. So as we kept going, the solution just got more and more convoluted with stuff and we could never make out what the final answer should have been.
That’s it. Yeah, not very long or complicated or eventful, but I thought the problem of looking for an answer and having your incremental step solutions be too complicated was a fascinating metaphor.
But for what in my life, I am not totally sure. XP
