Ambiguous Dreaming
Man. Had two incredibly convoluted and complicated dreams last night of “epic movie” proportions. At first I thought they were combined stories, but in retrospect I think they were two separate ones. Unfortunately most of the details are totally lost on me and all I remember are the main themes.
The first one was something like… me and several other people (no one I knew) were...

The Kotaku iPad article made a mention of this in-development MIT experiment called the SixthSense and the screencap was interesting, so I Googled and was pleasantly intrigued by the TED video that came up for it.
There are definitely similar strains of work occurring with this and the Gspeak (aka Minority Report system) that MIT was also developing.
I also find it relevant how they call it...

– Why The iPad is Crap Futurism
I’m very divided on what to think about the iPad. I’ll admit to being more or less completely disappointed (by everything except the price point…) … I had really expected / hoped for something entirely different.
So I’ve been reading...

W3Schools Historical Browser Statistics →
Takes a little bit to understand what’s going on, but kind of neat. There aren’t any explanations for what the data is of exactly… Spark thinks it’s browser access to w3schools.com specifically. Either way, kind of neat.
Please recommend a good DL of freeware to get rid of any/all evil stuff in...

The Housesitter's Club
Took a nap and had some kind of whack dream. It was unusual because I never identified as one of the people in the dream, rather than just experiencing the narrative as an omniscient other. Dream logic ftw.

When working on a long project in academia...
There are two ways to handle it.
Come up with a project and justify its existence.
Come up with a problem and justify its solution with a project.
In the end, no matter which you end up choosing, if it turns out your explanation is not matching the project, change the explanation and not the project.
Unless you hate the project. Then you’re screwed. >_>

Probably my favorite number from Princess and the Frog. (it’s not the whole thing of course, too bad, but good quality and “official”)
There’s a nice interview with Anika Noni Rose from the same user about her thoughts on the film and the characters. She said something lovely and poignant about Tiana’s song (Almost There)… how it’s not about...

These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered—combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web—have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing...

This interview was the reason I decided I wanted to see Avatar in the first place. Thought I would dig it up to show my parents. My mom immediately phoned me after getting out of the theater, demanding to know how the film had been made, but I didn’t remember all the details from the interview.
In retrospect, re-watching it… it didn’t seem super revolutionary at first, but this...

On education
The quotes I agree with that were said by Michelle Rhee, on what is necessary for improving education.
“real focus on teacher quality and human capital”
“level of compensation that puts them on par with doctors, lawyers, investment bankers … the most respected professions in the country”
But… I don’t agree with her on the point that technology...

Insensitive
I think if I had to hate a certain type of person the most, it’d be this kind. Insensitive statements absolutely drive me up the wall and I desperately feel like punching the lights out of anyone who utters these completely nonconstructive phrases.
And it doesn’t even matter whether or not the person who is saying it knows they’re being a jerk, either… I get pissed at...

From ‘Avatar’ Joins Holiday Movies That Fail an Antismoking Test
In a statement sent by e-mail over the weekend, Mr. Cameron said he had never intended Ms. Weaver’s character, Grace Augustine, to be “an aspirational role model” for teenagers.
“She’s rude, she swears, she drinks, she smokes,” wrote Mr. Cameron. “Also, from a character perspective, we were showing that Grace doesn’t care...

The Downside
I’m sure you’ll recall that we have feral cats living in the parking lot of our apartment complex. I mean, not just in the parking lot, but all around in the area. It shares a wall/fencing with the surrounding complexes, so the cats go and come as they please and there’s not much anyone can do to really stop them without coordinating with several different owners.
At any rate,...

I saw Sherlock Holmes with the girls last Tuesday (29th). It was not terribly deep or thought-provoking, but had a healthy mix of humor and action scenes. It was, put simply, a very fun and entertaining romp… much like the first Pirates of the Carribean was. I felt that it was a charmingly quirky and completely pretenseless film. Definitely going on the list of must-see with the ATDP kids at...

So this year’s New Years log is a little different from usual, eh? I’ll admit that I toyed with the idea of quitting logging. The fact that I forget to flip, that I more often had nothing to say than something, that I’m now missing entries for a month’s worth of time… not to mention my dissatisfaction with the visual appearance of the space I was writing in.
